July IANDS Meeting

“Transcendence” Joseph Britton, Fri July 12 6:30-8:30 pm $25

Traveling outside of one`s body can be exhilarating, and frightening. The portal can open through intensive meditative studying or spontaneously. For Joseph Britton, this first happened upon his fourth birthday. His out of body experiences happened frequently as a child. In 1979, while on a spiritual pilgrimage in the Himalaya Mountains, he contracted amoebic dysentery. Upon being carried to a temple guest house in northern India, he was declared medically dead. While in this state he explored wondrous parts of the Cosmos. Upon returning to his body, subtle and clear sensory awareness opened up for him. He will share this extraordinary out of body journey, and more. Joseph Britton, at Princeton University, was formerly a Faculty member teaching Movement, Sound & Meditation and in a different department, an Engineer, designing energy systems. While living in Japan, at Osaka Prefecture University, he was a Professor of Communications & Mindfulness. Joseph also spent many years personally studying with renowned Zen Buddhist master Uchiyama Kosho Roshi in Kyoto, Japan. He has taught seminars through-out Asia and Europe; became licensed in Hellerwork body & movement therapy; and is presently a hospice volunteer accompanying people who die alone.

“The Way of Dying” Joseph Britton, Sat 3:00 – 5:00 pm  $25

Where is our mind and emotions in our final earthly days? What is our state of awareness, when we are declared “clinically dead?” What happens to our body and spirit after we die? Can we say we will not die tomorrow? Our “real talk about living & dying” is not a casual, breezy topic yet many are surprised and wonderfully uplifted as it brings us: clarity, vitality and lightness of being that we can appreciate the magnificence of each moment of this precious lifetime; all heaviness is removed and fear is released; and our being is illuminated. Death is our secret teacher hiding in plain sight, helping us to discover what matters most. Come and join us for discussion, meditation, self-exploration and be free! Terri conducts workshops throughout the U.S. to help the dying and the bereaved find healing through meditative, ceremonial and therapeutic processes that focus on inner transformation rather than external events. Her work is acclaimed by physicians, hospice workers, grief counselors and clergy for its pinpoint clarity on the process of dying and grieving, and its heartfelt depiction of consciousness beyond the physical body. .
Terri has a BA in Religious Studies from Marylhurst University, an MA in Pastoral Care & Counseling from Fordham University, and is a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Care and Counseling from the San Francisco Theological Seminary.

She is the author of three books on death and the afterlife, and is also the founder of the annual Afterlife Awareness Conference.

WHO: Rev. Dr. Terri Daniel,  DMin, CT, CCTP
WHERE: New Renaissance Book Shop
WHEN:  Thursday, September 19, 6:30-8:00
Near-Death Experience: Now That we Know, What Should we Do?

We've heard the stories and we've read the research. We know consciousness continues after the body dies, and we, as a culture, have been intellectually and spiritually elevated by learning about these life-altering experiences. So what's next? How do we teach and support conscious dying and a metaphysical understanding of birth, death and beyond?

Since the 1970s we have collected an enormous body of evidence that validates NDEs, deathbed visions and after-death communication. But for experienced spiritual seekers, that's old news, and it's time for a new generation of teachings to take us to the next step.

WHO: Rev. Dr. Terri Daniel,  DMin, CT, CCTP
WHEN:  Sunday, September 22, 3-5pm
WHAT: Mini Workshop
Conscious Grieving: Turning Loss into Light

In this presentation, you'll become familiar with multi-cultural customs and spiritual healing tools that exist at the intersection of spirituality and psychology. We'll explore how Western knowledge about bereavement has evolved over the last several decades, with a focus on contributions from Buddhism, Shamanism and ancient Pagan traditions.

You will learn how the symbolic elements of ritual can assist with the release of emotional pain, and the evening will conclude with a heart-healing ceremony to mark our acceptance of impermanence and our innate ability to transform pain into power.

WHY: Because she is inspirational!

The experience was a classic NDE but she had never heard of these events, nor would she have believed such an experience could be real or change anybody's life. Joyce's life did change dramatically. Join her on May 10 to hear her NDE story and the changes to life and career that followed.

Bachelor of Interior Architecture/Architecture, Master’s in Transformative Education & (TEK) Traditional Ecological Knowledge and International Author I’ve spent decades creating, designing and specifying for residential, commercial and industrial buildings.  These creations have provided supportive, beautiful, balanced space and sanctuary for their residents. And say their consciously because I believe buildings are beings, too.

In the 80’s’s  I came across the first books on Permaculture while living on a farm and remodeling buildings for home and businesses.

As a successful business woman, entrepreneur, returning to college in 1983 as a single mom,  was a challenge.

I made this choice after experiencing a serious chemical poisoning while building my own home badly damaging my lungs. And at that point, made a commitment to keep this from happening to other people in their homes and work spaces. This included the many workers in construction trades who had high rates of cancer and other construction materials caused problems.

Having been around  design and construction since a young child, this was a natural pathway to follow.  As early as 7 years old, my dad took me to construction sites on weekends. I would roller skate in big empty industrial buildings or play with plans he gave me to re-draw. As a teenager I started working at my Dad’s Development Corp. under the architect,  helping to design residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

It became a mission, while  at University of Oregon’s School of Architecture , to research and provide the safest and most beautiful and supportive spaces for my clients.

Bringing Feng shui into my designs, came from a chi-gong instructor who explained in 1989, that feng shui was the equivalent of the physical body practice, on the body of a building. Balancing, harmonizing and optimizing good design and physical well being & health. It made perfect sense to me to learn this Eastern/ Tibetan practice and incorporate it into my buildings.

I spent years researching safer, less toxic materials and building products and construction methods to incorporate in all building projects I’ve been involved with. I created a school of green, sustainable materials and building design, grey water systems, composting toilets, water catchment and permaculture that I  oversaw and taught at for 10 years.

Years later, after a dance with cancer and recovery, I returned to Grad School to study Transformative Education and TEK (Traditional Ecological knowledge), to advance my teaching skills and knowledge base, to provide the best, most complete offerings for my students and clients. I continue my training to this day.

Learn how to Create Sanctuary in every environment!
Create beautiful and safer, Sacred Spaces with: Traditional and natural design, Feng Shui/ Gaiamancy™, Permaculture, greener & safer Interior and Exterior material solutions

“Death is nothing to fear – and life without fear can be lived to the fullest.”

This is Kimberly Clark Sharp’s message from her extraordinary experience during the time after her heart suddenly stopped beating and she lay on the sidewalk, not breathing, and without a pulse. Swept into a peaceful loving place of brilliant, golden light and warm comfort, she saw, for the first time, the meaning of life – and death. Guided by a new sensitivity to the presence of angels and other invisibilities, Kimberly began a career in medical social work that put her in direct contact with dying people – and ultimately, people who died and came back. The irrefutable evidence of out-of-body experiences Kimberly discovered led to a life-long mission providing validation and hope to near-death experiencers worldwide. Known for her wit and warmth, Kimberly Clark Sharp, MSW, LiCSW, is a near-death experiencer and author of After the Light. Named one of the “40 Most Influential People Under the Age of 40” in the Pacific Northwest in 1987 for her work in the field of death and dying, Kimberly pioneered the field of critical care social work, founded the department of social work at the world’s first bone marrow transplant center and founded Seattle International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), the world’s oldest support group for NDErs. She also taught death and dying at the University of Washington School of Medicine and is a retired clinical assistant professor. IANDS.org
